There is no other place like countryside for those who have learned in childhood to love its monotonous landscape with innumerable lakes, rivers, forests and fields, its small quiet villages and modern settlements. Now I am a student and I live in a beautiful city - Yoshkar-Ola but I always remember that my heart and roots are still at the place where I was born. My birthplace is a village Shkalanka in the Kirov Region, it is 57 km from Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of Mari El. Let's get acquainted a little with history of our settlement. Shkalanka was founded about 205 years ago, when some Mari people looked for places, where trees grew. They used wood to built homes and they were occupied with agriculture, cattle-breeding. According to opinion of local old residents the settlement’s name comes from a call of its inhabitants. The legend says that a cow of one of Mari women Anna could be drowned with stagnant water and some people tried to cry “Shkal, Anka”, what means “a cow and Anna” in the Mari language. Nowadays Shkalanka is not a large village, the population consists of Maris, Russians and people of other nationalities (about 348 people). Nine Streets of our village are surrounded with wood from different directions. Today Shkalanka has its Culture House including a library and a post-office. The shop, our school of general education and one-, two-stroreyed houses are located in picturesque places of our village. In the center of our park is a monument to those killed in action during World War II. It is beautiful at any time of the year. It is a well-known fact that it is really very important not to lose the delights of the village way of life. I always remember about my birthplace and I know that the roots of the real villager are always to be found in the soil he loves. I love my village very much and I hope that it will be always surrounded by such beautiful nature.
